Long known as the “Silver City,” Meriden was home to the International Silver Company and other well known metal manufacturers like Bradley & Hubbard. Most of these companies no longer manufacture in Connecticut, but some of their 19th century buildings are being beautifully repurposed. With just over 60,000 residents, Meriden is typical of old New England industrial cities, and offers the benefits of urban/industrial living with an incredible wealth of natural open space.
People living in Meriden are just as likely to commute to Hartford or New Haven as to work locally. The median price housing stock varies, and includes both downtown urban areas and more rural suburban sections. The majority of housing (54%) is single family.
In 1,800 acre Hubbard Park you can find Castle Craig Tower, one of the tallest points within twenty five miles of the coast between Maine and Florida. The tower contains beautiful examples of trap rock stonework that are reminiscent of bridges on the Wilbur Cross Parkway and other places where the Works Progress Administration (WPA) left its mark during the Great Depression.

Meriden and its surrounding towns have golf courses, hiking and running paths and abundant recreational opportunities. The beautiful 14 acre Town Green contains walking trails, the 300 foot pedestrian Silver City Bridge and an outdoor amphitheater.
Hike to Mount Lamentation in Giuffrida Park. Enjoy a picnic, swimming or fishing at Beaver Pond. In addition to Castle Craig Tower, Hubbard Park includes the 62 mile Metacomet Trail. This Blue-Blazed Hiking Trail is part of the newly designated New England National Scenic Trail, which is easily accessible and close to large population centers.
Meriden has many treasures for history lovers, such as the Solomon Goffe House built in 1711. Visit one of the other landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Moses Andrews Homestead, the Curtis Memorial Library, the Charter Oak Firehouse, the West Main Historic District, the Meriden Curtain Fixture Company Factory (Charles Street Place Apartments), the Red Bridge and the U.S. Post Office.
